Backups and Exporting Reports
To ensure your trading history is preserved and to facilitate your tax declarations, Kaptur offers local tools to back up your data and generate structured financial reports.
1. Encrypted Backups (ZIP Backups)
Your data is stored locally on your device, meaning that if you lose or replace your phone, you could lose your history. To prevent this, perform regular encrypted backups:
Exporting a backup:
- Go to Settings and scroll down to the Backup & Restore section.
- Tap the Export button.
- Define a security password in the popup to encrypt your file (necessary to protect your financial data).
- Tap Confirm. An encrypted file with a
.kptrextension (an encrypted ZIP container) will be generated in your device's memory. - The system share menu will open automatically so you can email the backup file (
.kptr), save it to a physical drive, or save it to your private cloud storage.
Restoring a backup:
You have two methods to import and recover your data:
Method A: Manual Import
- On your device, go to Settings and, under the Backup & Restore section, tap Import.
- Select your backup file with the
.kptrextension from the system file explorer. - Enter the password you used to encrypt the backup.
- Tap Restore. Kaptur will import your history and restart the application to apply the database securely.
Method B: Direct Open/Share
- Locate your
.kptrfile in any external application (like your file manager, email, or WhatsApp). - Tap the file and select Kaptur from the list of applications to open it.
- The app will open immediately, showing the restore dialog; enter your password and tap Restore to complete the process.
- Locate your
2. Tax Accounting Methods: FIFO vs LIFO
The calculation of your assets' profits and losses and the cycle duration of each trade depend on the cost allocation method of your lots. Kaptur offers total flexibility:
- FIFO (First In, First Out): The first lot purchased is considered the first one sold when closing the position. This is the most common method required by tax authorities in most countries (including Spain and the US).
- LIFO (Last In, First Out): The last lot purchased is considered the first one sold. Useful for hedging analysis or specific strategies.
- Average Cost: Matches the sale using the weighted average cost of all your entries.
- Specific Lots (Manual): Lets you manually and visually choose which purchase units you want to pair with each sale.
- Broker Reported: Displays the raw data originally reported by your broker without any recalculation.
Where are they configured?
- Per position or account: You can select and switch the matching method in real time directly from the Trading Journal or when inspecting a position in the Transaction Detail screen to instantly see the impact on your metrics.
- For tax and accounting reports: When exporting your reports (
Settings->Export Trading Report), you have a toggle to switch between FIFO and LIFO to structure the tax lots spreadsheet (tax_lots.csv) according to your tax authority's requirements.
3. Exporting Reports for Taxes (CSV / ZIP)
When you need to declare your trades for taxes or share your numbers with an accountant:
- Go to Settings and tap Export Trading Report.
- Configure the Period and Filters: You can restrict the export to your entire history, the last 30 days, the current fiscal year, or a custom date range. You can also filter by specific Ticker, Broker Account, or issuing Broker.
- Select Report Sections: Using toggle switches, you can include or exclude the following information:
- Export Format (ZIP with CSVs):
- Upon exporting, Kaptur will compile a compressed ZIP archive on your device. This package contains structured spreadsheets in CSV format, ready to be analyzed in Excel/Numbers or imported by your tax accountant (
summary.csv,executions.csv,closed_trades.csv,daily_performance.csv,open_positions.csv,tax_lots.csv, andwarnings.csv).
