Backups and Exporting Reports

To ensure your trading history is preserved and to facilitate your tax declarations, Kaptur offers local tools to back up your data and generate structured financial reports.

1. Encrypted Backups (ZIP Backups)

Your data is stored locally on your device, meaning that if you lose or replace your phone, you could lose your history. To prevent this, perform regular encrypted backups:

Exporting a Backup:

  1. Go to the Settings screen and tap Export Backup.
  2. Define a security password in the popup to encrypt your file (necessary to protect your financial data).
  3. Tap Confirm. A compressed and encrypted ZIP file will be generated in your local memory.
  4. The system share menu will open automatically so you can email the backup file, save it to a physical drive, or save it to your private cloud storage.

Restoring a Backup:

  1. On the new device, go to Settings and tap Restore Backup.
  2. Select the backup ZIP file from your system file explorer.
  3. Enter the password you used to encrypt the backup.
  4. Tap Restore. Kaptur will replace the current database with your recovered history.

2. Tax Accounting Methods: FIFO vs LIFO

The calculation of your assets' profits and losses depends on the cost allocation method of your lots. Kaptur allows you to toggle the accounting rule in its calculations:

  • FIFO (First In, First Out): The first lot purchased is considered the first one sold when closing the position. This is the most common method required by tax authorities in most countries (including Spain and the US).
  • LIFO (Last In, First Out): The last lot purchased is considered the first one sold. Useful for hedging analysis or specific strategies.
  • Average Cost: Groups the purchase cost of all shares and assigns a weighted average price.

You can switch between these methods from the Settings menu under the Accounting method section to instantly recalculate your historical PnL consistently.

3. Exporting Reports for Taxes (CSV / PDF)

When you need to declare your trades for taxes or share your numbers with an accountant:

  1. Go to Settings and tap Export Trading Report.
  2. Configure the Period and Filters: You can restrict the export to your entire history, the last 30 days, the current fiscal year, or a custom date range. You can also filter by specific Ticker, Broker Account, or issuing Broker.
  3. Select Report Sections: Using toggle switches, you can include or exclude the following information:
    • Executions and Positions: Records of entries/exits and net balance.
    • Tax Lots: Detailed breakdown of lot allocation based on your selected accounting rule (FIFO/LIFO), perfect for justifying average cost to tax authorities.
    • Performance Metrics: Statistical summary of the period displayed in the header.
    • Private Fields: Options to include or exclude your personal annotations and transaction mindsets.
    • Ghost Trades: Include or exclude virtual simulation trades you use for testing.
  4. Export Format:
    • CSV/Excel: Structured table perfect for importing into tax tools or sending to your accountant.
    • PDF: A clean, structured report ready to print or attach.
  5. Tap Export to save the file to your device.
